Mentoring Training
Just went for the YEC mentoring training at Ulu Pandan CC (sure it's ulu) last sunday. There were only about 13 people from 4 different CCs. We had some team games and did the DiSC test. I am a high SC. Haha. So it means that I will be a supportive and conscientious mentor :)
This training is conducted by a non-profit organisation called Thumbs Up! which especially targets the youths. The general manager is a very charismatic man! Tall and shuai :) He used to be some vice-president at SGX before he quitted to start this mentoring thingy. He said he is still doing investing now, except that he is investing in people. So wei da. Ha.
The trainer, Jia Hui, is a sweet lady too. She showed us 2 very very good videos on mentors. The first one is about this olympic runner who hurt himself halfway during the race. It was so bad that he had to stop. So there were lots of people who came forward to help but he did not receive any of the hands. Then, his mentor who is also his father came. His father was always by his side encouraging him and even ran with him during all his training sessions. So when his father came to help him, the father said," Son, we started this race together and we are going to finish it together." So, together, the father helped his limping son to the finishing line. Very touching right!
The second one is actually a movie, 'Mr Holland Opus'. (Not too sure about the name). This Mr Holland had a dream- he wanted to compose a symphony that can make him famous and rich. So he decided to go into teaching, thinking that he would have more time for composing. In between, it showed how he had helped a girl who loved music, loved the clarinet but just could not play it well. Eventually, many years later, Mr Holland was going to retire but he felt that his life was misspent and he was a failure because he did not fulfill his dream of composing a symphony. On the day of his retirement, all the students that he taught came back to throw a surprise for him. The clarinet girl whom later became the Governor came back and made a speech. She said, "We are your symphony, Mr Holland. How many lives here have you not touched? We are all the notes of your opus!" The movie is really very touching. I must go and look for it!
I am very inspired after the mentoring training. Haha. So inspired that I decided to dedicate half of this entry to my students. Muahahaha.
Jenny - She is my favourite kid. Haha. A very typical young girl with a busy schedule - piano, dance and not forgotting my tuition sessions. This is the fourth year I am teaching her and I can see how she changes these years. Sometimes, we will also chat on msn. She got very fanciful emoticons for all her letters! It's a challenge to read the words, really. I brought her out for an excursion once. Hope there's another chance.
Yuanzhong - A fifteen year old young man. I am shocked at how much he changed in just 2 months. Voice broke, grow taller, pop pimples. Wah, I can no longer treat him like a little boy le. Haha. This is also the fourth year that I am teaching him. So I can understand him pretty well. I can still remember that I had once stressed him so much until he cried. Bah. But now, grow up le, so it's his turn to bully me le. He's quite nice cos he will be concerned if I go home too late from tuition. :)
Kangming - He is Jie's student. Just begin teaching him not long ago. A very diligence boy. Very thoughtful too. He likes to press the lift for me though I prefer taking the stairs. Haha.
Jieling - Jie's student too. Kangming's sister. She is only in primary 2. Very active. Haha. So I must always think of new ways to capture her attention. Jie, how do you do that in the past? Ha. She's very cute. Always like to show me this and that.
Yeah! I love all my students and I really hope they will do well. :D
